Synopsis
Guilty of Romance (恋の罪, 2011) is a Japanese thriller directed by Sion Sono that you can watch online on iFILM. Tagline: "Love is hell." A detective investigates a mutilated body found in a derelict love hotel. Cutting away from the crime scene, the film follows Izumi — wife of a celebrated romance novelist — whose domestic life contains not a single gram of romance.
Izumi starts small: nude modelling. Then she finds a mentor on the street and starts selling herself to strangers, maintaining a spotless housewife routine at home. Sono runs the two plotlines in parallel, letting the audience fit the pieces together long before the detective does. The cast is mostly Japanese, with the dual lead carried by the cold, precise work of the two actresses at the centre.
This is not an erotic thriller in the genre sense. It is closer to a dissection — of what happens when desire has nowhere to go, and what people are willing to break to feel something real. Methodical and genuinely disturbing. Stream Guilty of Romance (2011) online on iFILM.
