Synopsis
Tokyo Tribe (2014) — a Japanese action musical you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sion Sono. The whole film runs as a rap battle: characters negotiate, threaten, and argue entirely in verse, over a relentless hip-hop score.
In an alternate Japan, nighttime Tokyo is divided between rival street gangs called Tribes. Wu-Ronz leader Merra teams up with the ruthless gangster Buppa to ignite a citywide turf war. When a universally respected figure named Tera gets killed in the opening moves, the calculation collapses — clans that were shooting at each other the week before turn on Merra and Buppa together. Based on Santa Inoue's manga series. Sono made a film that is simultaneously a crime epic, an action movie, and a genre experiment that has no real equivalent — Western or Eastern.
