Messi
This is no ordinary biopic. This is no ordinary man.
Synopsis
Messi (2014) is a Spanish documentary directed by Álex de la Iglesia that you can watch online on iFILM. Running 93 minutes, it gathers the voices of coaches, childhood friends from Rosario, Barcelona teammates — Andrés Iniesta, Xavi, Gerard Piqué, Javier Mascherano, Carles Puyol — and opponents including Sergio Ramos and Josep Guardiola, all trying to answer the same question: who is the man behind the goals?
The film traces the arc from a twelve-year-old boy leaving Argentina for Catalonia, through the growth hormone treatment funded by the club, to the first training sessions alongside Ronaldinho. Diego Maradona, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Arjen Robben each weigh in. What emerges is less a career highlight reel and more a portrait assembled from contradictory impressions.
De la Iglesia made his name in horror and black comedy — documentary is not his natural territory, and the editing shows it. That outsider angle, though, gives the film an unexpected texture: he watches football the way a curious stranger would. Stream Messi (2014) online on iFILM.
