Synopsis
Watch Canyon Passage (1946) online on iFILM — a Technicolor western directed by Jacques Tourneur, shot the same year he made Out of the Past. Dana Andrews plays Logan Stuart, a freight merchant in 1856 Oregon who agrees to escort his best friend's fiancée Lucy (Susan Hayward) to Jacksonville, knowing it is a bad idea from the start.
Logan's troubles pile up fast: a killer named Honey Bragg is tracking him as a witness; his friend George (Brian Donlevy) has gambled away everything and needs pulling out of a hole; and his feelings for Lucy are not what a good friend's should be. Hoagy Carmichael appears as a wandering frontier poet and performs original songs directly on camera — two numbers that feel genuinely woven into the landscape rather than dropped in.
Tourneur shoots Oregon the way he shot city streets in his noirs: open, sun-lit, and somehow menacing. The daylight doesn't reassure anyone. An Apache uprising closes the film out as something closer to a siege than a traditional shootout, which is the sharpest choice in Canyon Passage — it keeps refusing to settle into a conventional western.
