Synopsis
The Harmonists (Comedian Harmonists, 1997) is a German-Austrian drama you can watch online on iFILM — director Joseph Vilsmaier's portrait of the real Berlin vocal sextet that packed concert halls across Europe and then got banned before the decade was out.
In 1927, six men started rehearsing comic songs and tight jazz arrangements in a small apartment. By the early thirties, Comedian Harmonists were famous from Berlin to Vienna. Three of the six had Jewish heritage. Under the laws that took effect in 1933, that was enough to end their career. Ben Becker, Heino Ferch, Ulrich Noethen, and Katja Riemann lead a cast that plays the story without leaning on sentiment — the friendship that couldn't outlast politics is more affecting for it.
