Synopsis
Carrington (1995), written and directed by Christopher Hampton, is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Emma Thompson plays painter Dora Carrington, Jonathan Pryce plays writer Lytton Strachey, and the film follows the two decades they shared a home without ever becoming a couple in any conventional sense.
Strachey was gay, a committed bachelor and a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group. Carrington fell for him regardless. She married military officer Ralph Partridge — played by Steven Waddington — but never truly left Strachey. Hampton tracks the quiet negotiations of jealousy, loyalty and unconventional attachment across twenty years, with Rufus Sewell, Samuel West, Janet McTeer and Jeremy Northam rounding out the cast.
Hampton adapted the film from his own stage play, and it shows in the best way: the dialogue is sharper than period dramas usually allow. The film took the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1995. Stream Carrington (1995) online on iFILM.
