Synopsis
Global Metal (2008) — a Canadian documentary you can watch online on iFILM — picks up where Sam Dunn's 2005 Metal: A Headbanger's Journey left off. This time Dunn, an anthropologist turned metal filmmaker, travels to Asia, South America and the Middle East looking for scenes that Western rock journalism never covered.
He finds Indonesian death metal, Chinese black metal and Iranian thrash — each scene shaped by local pressures: censorship, conflict, rapid modernization. Bruce Dickinson, Lars Ulrich, Max Cavalera, Tom Araya and Kerry King discuss how the genre traveled. What Dunn's argument comes down to is this: metalheads outside Europe and North America aren't importing a subculture — they're reinventing it. Stream Global Metal online on iFILM.
