Chile, the dawn of the 20th century. Wealthy landowner José Menéndez hires three riders to clear a path for his sheep across vast Patagonia, all the way to the Atlantic. A cold British officer leads the party, an American mercenary rides at his side, and a young mestizo named Segundo watches it all happen. Their survey of "empty" land soon becomes a hunt for the Selk'nam people who live on it.
Gálvez frames his first feature as an anti-western: no frontier heroics, just a record of sanctioned extermination, the sweeping beauty of the land set against the violence done on it. The film played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2023 and won the FIPRESCI prize there. It is hard, deliberate and unflinching — for viewers ready to look at history without varnish.
