Synopsis
The Mole Agent (El agente topo, 2020) is a Chilean documentary you can watch online on iFILM. A private detective needs an unlikely operative: an elderly man willing to move into a retirement home and quietly check whether one of the residents is being mistreated.
The job goes to Sergio, 83, recently widowed, charming, and hopeless with a smartphone. He settles into the home posing as an ordinary new resident, files video reports to his handler, and slowly forgets the mission entirely. Instead of surveillance there are lunches, birthdays, and lonely women no one has visited in years. To them Sergio becomes a friend, not a spy.
Director Maite Alberdi shoots it almost like fiction, yet everyone in front of the lens is real, which is exactly what tightens your throat. The film went all the way to an Oscar nomination for best documentary feature, and it disarms you right where you expect spy-craft.
