About

Synopsis

Kamome Diner (2006) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Naoko Ogigami, this Japanese-Finnish film follows Sachie, a Japanese woman who opens a small restaurant on a quiet Helsinki street and decides that onigiri — rice balls — are what the locals need.

For the first month, the only customer is a Finnish teenager obsessed with the anime Gatchaman. Then a lanky Japanese tourist named Midori wanders in, has nowhere particular to be, and stays. Another woman follows. The restaurant fills, not with drama but with people who happened to need somewhere to land. No antagonist, no real climax. The tension, if you can call it that, is entirely internal.

Shot on location in Finland, the film moves at the unhurried pace of the city itself. Ogigami frames the preparation of onigiri with such care it reads as its own kind of argument. For anyone who finds obligatory conflict exhausting, this one is worth the time. Stream Kamome Diner online on iFILM.
