Synopsis
1670 (2023) is a Polish satirical comedy from Netflix, shot as a mockumentary, and you can watch online on iFILM. Nobleman Jan Paweł, lord of the backwater village of Adamczycha, has one obsession: to become the most famous man in all of Poland. The camera trails him everywhere while he calmly narrates his own greatness — greatness that doesn't actually exist.
The trouble is he has to build that legend out of nothing. The family coffers are nearly empty, the peasants are restless and refuse to toil for free, a wealthier neighbor humiliates him at every turn, and his own household — a clear-eyed wife, a rebellious daughter and a pious son — keeps wrecking his schemes. Each episode hands the hero a grand new plan that collapses spectacularly, exposing the vanity, sloth and prejudice of 17th-century gentry Poland.
Directed by Maciej Buchwald and Kordian Kądziela, the series stars Bartłomiej Topa with Katarzyna Herman and Martyna Byczkowska. The talking-head format, straight out of The Office, lands hard as characters deliver the most absurd lines with a perfectly straight face. It became a hit by mocking present-day Poland through three-hundred-year-old costumes — one for fans of sharp historical satire.
