Synopsis
The Commune (Kollektivet, 2016) is a Danish drama directed by Thomas Vinterberg — watch it online on iFILM. Set in 1970s Copenhagen, the film draws on Vinterberg's own childhood memories of communal living to tell a story that starts as a social experiment and ends as something much harder.
Erik and Anna inherit a large house and, instead of selling, invite a mix of friends and strangers to share it. For a while it works. Shared meals, late-night arguments about house rules, the warmth of a chosen family. Then Erik falls for a younger woman and asks his wife to let her move in — and to be fine with it. Trine Dyrholm carries the film as Anna; her performance at the Berlin International Film Festival earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
Vinterberg doesn't stack the deck against the commune or in its favor. The discomfort comes from watching smart, well-meaning people discover that freedom without boundaries is still a decision — and decisions have costs. Stream The Commune online on iFILM.
