Synopsis
Lisbon Story (1994) is Wim Wenders' love letter to cinema and one city, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Sound engineer Philip Winter gets a postcard from a filmmaker friend stranded mid-shoot in Lisbon.
Winter crosses Europe to help, but by the time he arrives Friedrich has vanished, leaving only reels of footage behind. So Winter wanders the city instead — recording its noises, chasing its light, falling for the music of the Portuguese band Madredeus and singer Teresa Salgueiro. The plot barely tightens; the mood does all the work.
Wenders shoots it as a homage to the act of filmmaking itself, hand-cranked camera and all, with Portuguese cinema's grand old man Manoel de Oliveira turning up in a scene. Slow, musical, drifting — best if you'll follow a feeling rather than a story. Stream Lisbon Story online on iFILM.
