Synopsis
The Sunshine Boys (1975) is a Herbert Ross comedy you can watch online on iFILM, adapted by Neil Simon from his own Broadway hit. Lewis and Clark were once one of America's great vaudeville double acts, the toast of the variety stage.
Offstage, though, they couldn't stand each other, and they haven't traded a word in more than twenty years of retirement. Willy's nephew, a TV producer, dreams up a reunion for a nostalgia special — which means dragging two stubborn old men back into the same room, each nursing decades of grudges down to the last punchline. Walter Matthau plays the cranky Willy; George Burns, returning to the screen at eighty, plays his estranged partner.
That comeback role handed Burns the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, while Matthau landed a lead-actor nomination. The film lives on the bickering between its two comics, every jab polished by Simon like a stage bit. It's a treat for anyone who loves sharp verbal sparring and old-school showbiz.
