Synopsis
La Bataille de Gaulle: L'âge de fer (2026), the first part of Antonin Baudry's two-part biopic, is a French-Belgian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Simon Abkarian plays Charles de Gaulle in the weeks when France was falling apart.
Late June 1940. The armistice is signed, Pétain takes control, the country folds. One obscure brigade general refuses to follow. De Gaulle slips away to London with a handful of supporters and almost nothing else — no government, no army, no Allied recognition. In the moment it looked like recklessness; in retrospect it becomes the pivot of French history. The film's 160 minutes trace how that refusal grows into the Free France movement. Simon Russell Beale, Benoît Magimel, Matthieu Kassovitz, and Anamaria Vartolomei round out a strong ensemble.
Baudry treats the war as a political contest more than a military one — backroom negotiations, radio addresses, the slow accumulation of credibility from a borrowed London office. The companion film De Gaulle: The Sovereign Edge covers the rest of the story. Watch La Bataille de Gaulle: L'âge de fer (2026) online on iFILM.
