Synopsis
The Spider Woman (1943) is a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery you can watch online on iFILM. London is rattled by a string of wealthy men hurling themselves from windows. The press calls them suicides; Holmes reads them as murder, and senses a mind behind the deaths as sharp as Moriarty's and twice as poisonous.
To draw his opponent out, the detective fakes his own death — plunging from a Scottish cliff before a stunned Watson, his body never recovered, only his hat drifting downriver. Free to move unseen, Holmes goes undercover to unravel the so-called "pajama suicides." Gail Sondergaard's spider woman spins her web with patience and venom, and anyone who edges too close to the answer becomes a likely next target.
Directed by Roy William Neill, with Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Watson, this is one of the tighter entries in Universal's beloved black-and-white run. Sixty-three lean minutes, not a wasted scene. A fine pick for fans of old cinema who want a battle of wits over a chase. Stream The Spider Woman (1943) online on iFILM.
