Synopsis
The Family Friend (L'amico di famiglia, 2006) is an Italian drama directed by Paolo Sorrentino, available to watch online on iFILM. Before The Great Beauty and Youth made him a festival fixture, Sorrentino built this portrait of Geremia — a shabby tailor who moonlights as a money lender, inching his way into people's lives under the cover of goodwill.
Giacomo Rizzo plays him without a trace of sympathy-baiting: the man is small, bitter, and deliberate. He loans money to his neighbours and calls himself a friend of the family. Then a father comes asking for a wedding loan, and Geremia sees his daughter Rosalba — played by Laura Chiatti — and something shifts badly out of place. Fabrizio Bentivoglio completes the triangle in a way that doesn't go well for anyone.
It's a film about a certain kind of loneliness that curdles into control, and Sorrentino keeps the camera on his subject long past the point of comfort. Unpleasant in exactly the right way. Stream The Family Friend (2006) online on iFILM.
