Synopsis
Almanya: Welcome to Germany (Almanya — Willkommen in Deutschland, 2011) is a German comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, the debut feature of director Yasemin Samdereli. It follows the Yilmaz family — three generations shaped by their patriarch Hüseyin's decision to leave Turkey for Germany back in 1964, when he arrived as one of the country's first guest workers.
Forty-five years on, Hüseyin holds a German passport, a grown family, and the news that he has bought a house back in Turkey. The road trip he proposes sets off a debate that has been quietly building for decades: who in this family is German, who is Turkish, and who has long since stopped being sure? Samdereli cuts between the present-day journey and warm, sharply observed flashbacks to Hüseyin's early years in Germany, letting the comedy land through specificity rather than stereotype. The cast carries it with an ease that only comes from material that feels genuinely personal.
For a debut, it is remarkably assured — funny and a little melancholy in the same breath, the kind of film that works for a wide audience without dumbing anything down. Stream Almanya: Welcome to Germany online on iFILM.
