Synopsis

Watch Old Joy (2006) online on iFILM — a 74-minute indie drama directed by Kelly Reichardt, starring Daniel London and Will Oldham. Two old friends plan a weekend trip to a hot spring in the Oregon wilderness. Mark is about to become a father; Kurt is still drifting. They drive, they talk, they sit with the silence between words.

The film doesn't manufacture conflict. Nothing dramatic happens. What Reichardt captures instead is the slow, quiet way a friendship shifts shape over years — not through any single fight, but through the accumulation of different choices, different rhythms, different versions of what matters. By the time they reach the spring and then the road back home, both men feel it, even if neither names it.

Shot on 16mm around Portland with almost no budget, Old Joy took the Hivos Tiger Award at the 2006 Rotterdam International Film Festival and helped establish Reichardt as one of American independent cinema's most precise observers. A film for anyone who has driven somewhere with someone they used to know better. Stream Old Joy on iFILM.
