Synopsis
The Returned (Les Revenants, 2004) is a French drama-fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Robin Campillo, it opens in a quiet town where thousands of the recently buried climb out of their graves and walk home.
There is no menace in them. They move a little slowly, say little, and drift back to old jobs and the families who already mourned them. Officials and relatives have no script for this — do you celebrate, panic, or quietly look for a way to send them back? The dead, meanwhile, seem to be waiting for something. Géraldine Pailhas, Jonathan Zaccaï and Frédéric Pierrot lead the cast.
Campillo takes a zombie premise and bends it into a cool social parable: no gore, no chases, just the uneasy question of whether the living can really take their dead back. The idea later grew into the acclaimed Canal+ series of the same name. If loud horror tires you out and you want something slow and quietly disturbing, this one fits.
