Alec and Zooey Morrison have all but given up on becoming parents. Then a seven-year-old named Eli turns up at their door — a small boy in a jacket and glasses, oddly wise for his age, who says the adoption agency sent him. His arrival shakes the hushed house back to life and warms a marriage that had gone cold, though there is plainly something not quite ordinary about the boy.
