Synopsis
Moscow on the Hudson (1984) is a comedy-drama directed by Paul Mazursky — watch it online on iFILM. Robin Williams plays Vladimir Ivanoff, a saxophonist with a Soviet circus tour who steps into Bloomingdale's to buy blue jeans and walks out as a defector.
He is not a dissident or a hero. Just a quiet man who ran out of reasons to go back. New York swallows him whole: no English, no money, no map for any of it. A Black security guard named Orlando (Cleavant Derricks) is the first person to treat him like a human being. An Italian immigrant behind the perfume counter, Lucia (Maria Conchita Alonso), becomes something more. The city is loud, exhausting and indifferent — and Vladimir falls for it anyway.
Mazursky resists the easy triumphalism that the premise practically begs for. Williams plays it straight, almost quietly, and the film is stronger for it — less a celebration of the American dream than an honest look at what it costs to start over from zero.
