Synopsis
Pal Joey (1957) is an American musical you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Sidney for Columbia Pictures. Frank Sinatra plays Joey Evans, a smooth-talking nightclub singer with no money, no loyalty, and an unfailing gift for walking into rooms he shouldn't be in.
Vera Simpson (Rita Hayworth) is the wealthy widow who bankrolls Joey's club with full knowledge of what she's doing. Linda English (Kim Novak) is the girl who actually believes him. The film moves through the Rodgers and Hart songbook — "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" — tunes that left this movie and became jazz standards independent of it.
Based on a 1940 Broadway show originally built around Gene Kelly, the film works partly because Sinatra doesn't try to make Joey likable. He plays a man who simply assumes he is — which turns out to be far more interesting to watch. Stream Pal Joey (1957) online on iFILM.
