Synopsis
The Day of the Triffids (2009) is a British sci-fi miniseries you can watch online on iFILM. A dazzling meteor shower blinds almost everyone on Earth overnight — everyone but the handful who happened not to look up.
Bill Masen kept his sight by chance, his eyes bandaged in a hospital bed during the light show. He walks out into a silent London and learns that human blindness is only half the catastrophe. The triffids are loose: tall, mobile, carnivorous plants farmed for decades for their valuable oil, now lashing out with venom and feeding on anyone who can't run. Alongside a journalist named Jo, Bill fights to stay alive and to figure out who is worth trusting.
Adapted from John Wyndham's 1951 novel, it stars Dougray Scott and Joely Richardson, with Eddie Izzard, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave filling out the cast. Director Nick Copus pitches the two episodes closer to a disaster thriller than a slow apocalypse. A good pick for anyone who enjoys that very British strain of cosy catastrophe.
