Synopsis
Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops (1991) is a Japanese sci-fi crime film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Mamoru Oshii sets it in an alternate Japan that lost the war to Germany. An armoured elite police unit called Kerberos refused disarmament orders, fought back, and was crushed — most members jailed, but their officer Todome slipped out.
Ex-Kerberos fighter Inui walks out of prison three years later with one goal: track Todome down in Taiwan. What he doesn't know is that the tip about Todome's location was planted, and the Public Security bureau is using him as a tracking dog.
Oshii made this four years before Ghost in the Shell, and the distance from genre action is already clear. The film moves slowly and deliberately — closer to a melancholy study of loyalty and disposable soldiers than to anything you'd call a thriller.
