Synopsis

In the ancestral castle, Peter Kleist reads an old parchment aloud and wakes something that had stayed buried under a curse for centuries. The Baron once burned a witch at the stake, and she damned him to agony and an endless return. Now the caped sadist prowls the corridors again, and his torture instruments are very real. Elke Sommer and Joseph Cotten play the pair left to stop the thing that has come back.
Bava works less with blood than with light: fog, colored shadows, a castle that seems to breathe menace. Mood matters more than plot logic here, and that's the whole charm of vintage Italian gothic.
