Synopsis
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2017) is a documentary you can watch online, directed by Steve James. It follows Abacus Federal Savings, a family-run bank in New York's Chinatown, through a five-year criminal trial.
The case had a strange internal logic. After the 2008 financial collapse, no major Wall Street institution faced criminal indictment — yet Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. charged the Sung family with mortgage fraud. Their bank had served the Chinatown community for four decades. James, the director who made Hoop Dreams in 1994, builds the film from courtroom footage and candid interviews with the family itself. No narrator delivers a verdict. The facts do.
The Academy shortlisted it for Best Documentary Feature. Watch Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2017) online on iFILM.
