About

Synopsis

The Black Swan (1942) is a swashbuckling Caribbean adventure-romance you can watch online on iFILM. When the infamous buccaneer Henry Morgan accepts a royal pardon and the governorship of Jamaica, he's tasked with sweeping the seas clean of the very pirates he once sailed beside.

Tyrone Power stars as a reformed corsair Morgan sends to bring the holdouts to heel. Complicating everything is the former governor's daughter, played by Maureen O'Hara, who answers his blunt courtship with pure contempt. Abducting her aboard a warship does little for romance — and once the rogues led by George Sanders and Anthony Quinn make their move, the wooing gives way to a fight where the prize is the woman herself. Laird Cregar fills out the cast as a larger-than-life Morgan, with Thomas Mitchell along for the voyage.

Henry King directed, adapting Rafael Sabatini, who also gave us Captain Blood. Leon Shamroy's lush three-strip Technicolor took home the Oscar for cinematography, and the picture still looks gorgeous for it. This is old-school Hollywood: boarding parties, flashing swords, no irony. One for fans of golden-age studio filmmaking and pirate yarns from before the effects era.
