About

Synopsis

Winged Migration (Le Peuple migrateur, 2001) is a French documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jacques Perren. For 89 minutes it follows birds in flight — geese, storks, cranes, puffins, and dozens of other species — across oceans, deserts, mountain ranges, and frozen coastlines.

No CGI. Perren's crew flew alongside the birds on hang gliders, helicopters, and ultralight aircraft, sometimes spending entire seasons building the trust of specific flocks before a camera ever rolled. The production ran for three years, covered four continents, and tracked fifty-five species on routes totalling thousands of miles. The result is footage that feels categorically different from conventional wildlife filmmaking: the birds are at eye level, close enough to see individual feathers bend in the wind.

The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. It works almost without narration — long stretches pass with only sound design and Bruno Coulais's score. Not a film that explains things. Just the migration, in full. Stream Winged Migration (2001) online on iFILM.
