About

Synopsis

Shaka Zulu (1986) is the sweeping historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. William C. Faure directed this ten-part South African production, with Henry Cele in the title role alongside Edward Fox, Christopher Lee and Trevor Howard.

The year is 1823, near the southern tip of Africa. Shaka's Zulu kingdom — reshaped by a commander who rewrote how armies fight — is pressing toward the British colony at the Cape. London answers by sending a ragged mix of scouts, mercenaries and career soldiers to reach the king and gauge how dangerous his forces really are. Around that mission the series winds back through Shaka's own life: the outcast boy, the battlefield innovations that made him unbeatable, and the palace scheming that would eventually bring him down.

Cele plays Shaka without filtering him through a European lens — not a savage, not a saint, but a ruler whose cruelty grows out of old wounds. The scale is enormous, the battles staged with thousands of extras, and the prophecy and myth are braided into the recorded record rather than pasted on top.
