Synopsis
Leviathan (2013) is an experimental documentary you can watch online on iFILM, shot aboard a commercial fishing trawler off the New England coast.
Directors Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel strapped dozens of small GoPro cameras everywhere — to nets, to oilskins, underwater, above the deck, down among the thrashing catch. The camera plunges into the swell, slides across fish scales, then rises with the gulls. There is no narration, no interviews, no score. Just groaning winches, black water and the brutal night labor of the crew.
Made by Harvard's Sensory Ethnography Lab, the film turns industrial fishing into something almost alien — beautiful and unsettling at once. This isn't a movie with a story; it's an experience. If you can sit with pure sensation and no hand-holding, it offers what a standard doc can't. Stream Leviathan (2013) online on iFILM.
