Synopsis
He Walked by Night (1949) is a lean police-procedural noir you can watch online on iFILM. Postwar Los Angeles, after dark. A burglar works the electronics shops alone, tuned to police radio so he always knows where the squad cars aren't.
Roy Morgan (Richard Basehart) is a former Army radio engineer who stays cold and nearly invisible. He alters his looks, digs a bullet out of his own side, and shoots without hesitation. The detectives rebuild him from scraps — a print, a shell casing, a half-remembered face — while a narrator walks you through the grind of the investigation like a case file read aloud.
John Alton's camera turns the climactic chase through the storm drains into pure light and shadow, one of the images the whole genre later borrowed. Watch the squad room and you'll spot Jack Webb, who soon spun this exact texture into the radio show Dragnet. Tight, hard, and quick on its feet — a treat for fans of early crime realism.
