Synopsis
"Beautiful City" (شهر زیبا, 2004) is an Iranian drama you can watch online on iFILM — one of Asghar Farhadi's first features, made years before "A Separation" earned him an Academy Award and put Iranian cinema on every major critics' list.
Akbar is eighteen and out of time. He killed a girl two years ago; under Iran's qisas law the execution was deferred until he came of age. His friend A'la, just released from the same facility, sets out to find the victim's father and convince him to accept blood money in place of an execution order. It is not a negotiation with many levers. A'la also falls for Akbar's sister — played by Taraneh Alidoosti, who would later carry "The Salesman" — and the two threads pull against each other through the whole film.
Farhadi builds no villains here. Everyone is stuck in a system that converts grief into legal process, and the film watches what that does to ordinary people. Stream "Beautiful City" (2004) on iFILM.
