Synopsis
The Steel Road (Turksib, 1929) is a Soviet documentary by Viktor Turin, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The silent film records the construction of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway, the line built to tie the cotton fields of Central Asia to the grain belt of Siberia.
Turin frames the whole thing as a duel between people and nature — sandstorms, waterless steppe, brutal heat, and two sets of rails creeping toward each other across the desert. With no actors and no scripted story, working purely through editing and the rhythm of the cut, the picture turns an industrial chronicle into something genuinely gripping. It earned a reputation well beyond the USSR and is still taught as a landmark of early documentary filmmaking. Stream The Steel Road online on iFILM.
