Synopsis
Invisible Life (A Vida Invisível, 2019) is a Brazilian-German drama directed by Karim Aïnouz — watch online on iFILM. Rio de Janeiro, early 1950s: sisters Eurídice (Carol Duarte) and Guida (Julia Stockler) share a bedroom and a set of dreams that their father will never allow.
One wants to study piano in Vienna. The other runs off with a man, expecting freedom. Their father's silence — cold, absolute — separates them, and neither knows what happened to the other for years. Fernanda Montenegro plays the mother, a woman who absorbs everything and acts on nothing. At 139 minutes the film takes its time, and earns it.
At Cannes 2019 it claimed the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section. Aïnouz described it as a "tropical melodrama," and that phrase does the job: the heat and lush landscape press in on two lives that geography and family conspired to keep apart. Stream Invisible Life (2019) online on iFILM.
