The Plague of the Zombies

The Plague of the Zombies (1966) is a British horror film from Hammer that you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by John Gilling, it unfolds in a remote Cornish village where healthy young people keep dropping dead for no clear reason.

Medical professor Sir James Forbes (André Morell) answers a former student's plea and travels down to identify the illness. The trail leads to the estate of a local squire who has recently come back from Haiti with more than souvenirs. This is one of the earliest films to picture zombies as a sorcerer's obedient slaves, made before Romero rewrote the rules. Its graveyard sequence, with the dead clawing out of the earth, would be borrowed by filmmakers for decades. Fog, muted color and slow dread are exactly what Hammer fans come for.
