Synopsis
Made in U.S.A (1967) is a crime drama from Jean-Luc Godard you can watch online on iFILM. Paula Nelson arrives in town to meet her lover Richard, only to learn he is dead. She decides to dig into the killing herself and find out who did it.
The hunt quickly folds into a maze of gangsters, politicians and fresh corpses, where the usual detective logic comes apart on purpose. Godard isn't filming a plot so much as a collage: comic-book primary colors, scraps of advertising, literary quotes, lines spoken straight to the lens. His muse Anna Karina takes the lead, with Jean-Pierre Léaud alongside her and singer Marianne Faithfull, who delivers "As Tears Go By" a cappella in a café.
The script loosely borrows from a Donald Westlake novel written as Richard Stark, though Godard never cleared the rights — which kept the picture out of American theaters for decades. This is late French New Wave, a political pamphlet dressed up as noir, nodding to the Ben Barka affair. Be warned: it's a film for Godard devotees who welcome a puzzle, while anyone expecting a tidy whodunit will find its deliberate incoherence baffling. Watch Made in U.S.A (1967) online on iFILM.
